The popular community event will be held on the grounds of St. Margarets Catholic Church, which is located at 13790 South Wintzell Avenue in Bayou La Batre, AL. Festival admission is free. This years event will include a wide selection of family-friendly activities throughout the weekend, including long-time festival traditions and exciting new features. A number of activities will lead up to the actual blessing of the fleet, including the first annual Alabama Working Waterfront Exhibit, presented by The Alabama Working Waterfront Coalition in partnership with the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC) and Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center (AUMERC). The weekend-long exhibit will highlight the impact, heritage and cultural traditions of working waterfronts and water-dependent industries on Alabamas coastal communities. Throughout the weekend, festival-goers can enjoy arts and crafts booths, live entertainment from local performing groups, childrens activities, train rides, bayou boat tours, bingo and more. As always, great food will be available, including traditional Bayou La Batre seafood dishes featuring shrimp, oysters and fish as well as a full Vietnamese menu prepared by "the locals", sno cones, hamburgers, hot dogs, desserts and more. Another new feature this year will be a certified 4-mile run on Saturday morning. On Saturday, there will also be a Gumbo Cook-off from 11 am - 2 p.m. and kayaking will be available throughout the day. Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The Blessing of the Fleet land parade will begin at 2 p.m. and will be immediately followed by the boat parade. The official Fleet Blessing will be conducted by the Most Reverend Thomas J. Rodi, Archbishop of Mobile. The land parade and boat parade are open to anyone who would like to participate, and cash prizes will be awarded to the best decorated boats in three categories (recreational, small commercial and large commercial). There is no fee to be in either parade, though pre-registration is required to enter the decorated boat contest. Additional details and registration forms are available at FleetBlessing.org and facebook.com/FleetBlessingBayouLaBatre. For more information call (251) 824-2415 or email fleetblessing@aol.com.
