Athol Memorial Hospital is a Critical Access, non-profit acute care hospital serving the nine communities of the North Quabbin Region. The hospital’s service area includes, but is not limited to, the towns of Athol, Erving, New Salem, Orange, Petersham, Phillipston, Royalston, Warwick, and Wendell. The hospital opened its doors in 1950, the result of the efforts of community and business leaders to establish a local hospital to serve the healthcare needs of the region. Land on which to build was donated by the family of Addison Sawyer, an inventor whose residence once stood where the hospital building is located. Originally, the hospital was to be named Athol Hospital, but the name was changed to Athol Memorial Hospital to honor the sons of Athol who gave their lives in World War II. A plaque of their names is on the wall of the Main Lobby. In 1999 Athol Memorial Hospital was faced with closing its doors. The Save Our Hospital Campaign, spearheaded by members of the Auxiliary and our current Board of Trustees, raised the money from the community and area businesses to remain open. Since then the hospital has consistently run in the black, made many improvements to our facility and services, and continues to meet the challenges of delivering “Quality healthcare close to home.”
Our staff of highly trained dedicated professionals provides skilled diagnosis and treatment in all major medical disciplines. Our growing roster of physicians based in Athol and Orange include family practitioners, internists, pediatricians, surgeons, anesthesiologists and other specialists. Physicians in many specialties, plus primary care physicians, have office hours in our Medical Arts Building and in the West River Health Center in Orange.
AMH features acute care treatment facilities, including fully-equipped operating room suites, intensive care unit, and 24-hour emergency room. Our commitment to modern ambulatory care includes a high tech laboratory, cardio-pulmonary services and short-stay unit. Our radiology department includes accredited digital mammography, Spiral CT scan, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and nuclear medicine.
Currently accredited by the Joint Commission (2009-2012). Our laboratory is accredited through COLA (2007-2009Less
