* Our Lady of the Lake was named the Hospital of the Year by the Louisiana State Nurses Association at their annual Nightingale Awards. The Nightingale awards recognize quality service in the nursing and healthcare industry. * To further support the stabilization of graduate medical education, application has been made for the hospital's first Pediatric Residency Program. * The purchase of 250 acres in Livingston Parish was completed in anticipation of an expanded presence in this growing part of our service area. Groundbreaking is anticipated in 2009. * For the tenth time in ten years, OLOL was recognized with the Consumer Choice Award. In appreciation, we donated 100 trees to be planted in our community. * The halfway point of Vision 2020 was reached with completion of 120 renovated patient rooms. * The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins received renewal of its accreditation from the American College of Surgeons with a perfect score and 11 commendations. * The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins sponsored the first Minority Cancer Awareness Day to target patients who often miss screening opportunities. Over 600 persons were screened in a single day. * All Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) goals were met including the reduction of hospital acquired MRSA in the critical care units, improved surgical care and the reduction of harm from high-risk medications. * The hospital dedicated its mobile telehealth bus which allows for outreach in times of regional disaster and extends primary care services to patients in undeserved areas. * The Critical Care Medicine Service was formed with full-time intensivists providing round-the-clock coverage for the intensive care units. * Lake Primary Care Physicians added two new clinics to their network; the Allergy and Immunology Clinic and the Pediatric Gastroenterology Clinic - this pediatric specialty practice is the only one of its kind in the Baton Rouge area. * The practice of physician triage was initiated in our Emergency Room improving patient experiences and immediately reducing the incidence of patients leaving without being seen. * Twenty-five OLOL team members were paired as reading friends with students from the hospital's adopt-a-school, Wildwood Elementary. Over the course of the year, students improved performance in all categories. * The School of Nursing at OLOL College received reaccreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) for eight years for its associate of science in nursing program. * The Master of Science in nurse anesthesia program graduated its first class of students. These graduates achieved a 100% pass rate on their certification exam. * Several surgeries were broadcast over the internet and remain in the video archives on our website. * The new OLOL Center for Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery provides immediate treatment for reconstructive surgery required as a result of trauma. This practice provides the only trained plastic surgeon in the area performing the DIEP flap, a procedure resulting in fewer complications for breast cancer patients. a year to Believe in.
