Booking your tickets
over the Internet is no longer a formidable idea, perhaps the scary
part is trying to navigate yourself through the overabundance
of sites available. Lately it seems as though the Internet is full
of various dot-coms offering "cheap" flights. But, which site offers
what is right for you? Well, that depends - do you have a flexible
schedule, do you prefer a certain airline and are you willing to connect
through other airports before arriving to your final destination?
These questions are just a few of the things you need to consider
when looking for an airfare Internet deal. Here is a quick overview
of some popular travel reservation sites that hopefully will get you
up higher in altitude while allowing you to keep a positive attitude!
Pros: DollarTravel offers to send you a free newsletter filled
with airline related news, tips and deals each week along with money-saving
specials by email. Dollar Travel has a helpful hints section containing
information on how to purchase cheaper tickets. Some of these suggestions
include, buying tickets 21 days in advance, avoiding holidays and
choosing a flight with a lot of seat availability.
Cons: The downside of purchasing tickets here is that you will
be charged $10 for each ticket ordered. Also, if the airline you select
does not have ticket-less travel they will add an additional $10 paper
charge onto your bill.
Pros: Expedia has many different choices for how you wish to
go about finding a ticket. For example, they have a cool feature called
Fare Compare. This option allows you see the best fares other Expedia.com
customers are finding on their most popular routes. They also have
an informative news and advice section.
Cons: In using Fare Compare for example, optimum flights may
not always be available (some fares may be sold out or expired). In
this case, Expedia suggests using the Fare Compare to search for similar
fares, using the fares you find to judge which available fares offer
the best deals and to see when ticket availability is highest for
your desired route.
Pros: This website allows you to bid for a ticket to your destination
of choice. Basically, you tell them your dates and set your maximum
price per ticket (including all fees & taxes). Then, Priceline.com
does the rest for you! If they find a match, they complete the purchase
and reveal the airline and flight details.
Cons: To ensure your bid is accepted you need to try and do
the following: fly off-peak hours and be willing to fly on a non-jet.
Be aware trip may require a change of aircraft or airline en route.
Tickets are non-refundable and no matter how inconvenient the flight
arrangements come out (like flying from Atlanta to Dallas with a 5-hour
layover in Denver), there is no backing out if the ticket/price is
found. Each ticket you receive will have a $5.95 ticket charge. Also,
if a paper ticket is needed there will be a $12.50 service charge.
Pros: Travelocity has a lot of different purchase options for
selecting tickets. One in particular being, "My travel dates are flexible."
Clicking on this link compiles a list allowing you to search for the
lowest fare offered and the dates that are open for travel. This is
a new feature and is now available for all domestic and international
travel. Another neat option is, "My travel dates are not flexible,
but my travel times are." This search reveals the 9 best-priced itineraries
for your selected date.
Cons: Be careful of the usual agreements associated with the
online buying/selling of tickets. For example, your ticket is non-refundable,
changes may incur penalties and/or increased fares and once ticket
is issued, it may not be reassigned to a different passenger.
Pros: This site offers some really great deals for people who
have a flexible travel schedule. Be sure to check out the "Snooze
You Lose" section. It is full of great deals to destinations throughout
the US (though most of these flights have restrictions such as no
Saturday stay that apply). Best Fares also has a "Scam Watch" section
available for you to peruse through, which is very informative.
Cons: You have to be a member to access most of the site's
uniqueness such as the "Hidden Travel Deals" section or the "Maximize
Your Miles" section. In fact, to access the majority of this site
you need to become a member. And although being a member seems to
have its perks (mailed magazine, etc.) - it comes with a price tag
$59.90 for US residents and $79.90 for Canadian residents.
Pros: Air4Less' site is very organized and easy to navigate.
Simply enter in your desired destination and flight time and Air4Less
will pull up your available options. Availability and pricing is presented
one airline at a time. Just keep clicking until you find the itinerary
which suits your needs best.
Cons: Tickets purchased must be delivered to the address you
provide them. Also, the name on your credit card and the address must
match for the transaction to successfully go through. In addition,
someone will need to be at home to sign for your airplane tickets
upon their arrival. Tickets purchased are also highly restricted.
A $5 delivery fee applies to each order, not each individual ticket.
