Ice Cream - Cool Off Your Mouth!

I scream, you scream - will somebody please give me some ICE CREAM! Did you know ice cream was being eaten as early as the thirteenth century? Rumor has it the Emperor Nero of Rome concocted this elementary version of ice cream by combining honey, nectar and fruit pulp. However, it was quite a while before the first ice cream parlor opened in 1776. And now with so many brands, flavors and varieties just choosing one is enough to give you a brain freeze! Everyone from King Charles 1 of England, (who reportedly offered a cook a job for life if he would make him ice cream) to President Clinton, (who was recently seen on his birthday at Ben & Jerry's) seems to have a certain affection for the frozen treat. Here's the scoop!

Baskin Robbins: Everyone knows their famous motto, "31 Flavors." Opening in 1946, Baskin Robbins has since developed over 950 flavors of ice cream. And with these numbers, you should be sure to find something to tweak your taste buds. Don't miss out on trying their designated flavor of the month, Orange Cone Cyclone is what they currently recommend to keep your mouth happy.

Ben & Jerry's: Known for flavors such as Cherry Garcia®, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Phish Food Ice Cream; Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream shops have become a favorite across America as well as Internationally. Ben & Jerry's entire menu totals over 50 great ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbet products. They even have kosher ice cream products available (indicated by a "K") following the flavor name.

Blue Bunny: Blue Bunny® received its name from a "Name that Ice Cream" contest with the prize being $25 cash in 1935. Blue Bunny is proud of the fact that "more ice cream is produced in LeMars, Iowa, by a single company -- BLUE BUNNY® -- than in any other city in the world." Be sure to check out Blue Bunny's pick of the week! They choose a favorite from every variety of ice cream they offer - try them all.

Edy's: Opened in 1928 by William Dreyer and Joseph Edy, Edy's ice cream has become a familiar name throughout America. One interesting fact about Edy's is that they are responsible for creating an American classic - Rocky Road. Created during the depression, "Dreyer and Edy hoped the name would give people something to smile about" according to John Harrison, Edy's Grand Ice cream's "Official Taster." Edy's is also credited with concocting peppermint flavored ice cream.

Blue Bell: Established in 1920, Blue Bell is another solid contender in the world of Ice Cream. Their slogan, "we eat all we can and we sell the rest" is a familiar tune to most and they stand firm behind their belief that Blue Bell "makes their ice cream as good as they can - not how fast they can." They offer year round flavors as well as seasonal ice cream flavors, which can only be made when the fruit is ready to be harvested.

Haagen-Dazs: Introduced 35 years ago, Haagen-Dazs claims to have introduced the world to superpremium ice cream. They stand by the fact that their ice cream "is real ice cream, made from real ingredients, lovingly combined." If you have the urge to indulge yourself, try one of their great flavors including: apple cream pie, chocolate chocolate fudge or creme caramel pecan.

Marble Slab Creamery: Known for their waffle cones available in flavors ranging from Vanilla Cinnamon to Dark Chocolate, Marble Slab has gained wide popularity throughout America. Their homemade superpremium ice creams are also delicious! Their niche on the market is what they do with your ice cream after you decide what flavor you want to eat. Your ice cream will be scooped onto a frozen marble slab, where your choice of candy, fruit or nuts will be blended to make a tasty frozen treat.

Some other interesting facts about Ice Cream:

  • The first ice cream cone was made on September 22, 1896 by Italo Marchiony.
  • Cookies 'N Cream was not introduced until 1983, but became an overnight success and ranks among the top five of best selling ice creams.
  • Superpremium and premium ice cream represent about 53.8 percent of the total dollar sales of ice cream.
  • The most popular ice cream flavors continue to be vanilla, chocolate, fruit flavors and nut flavors.
